What Do You Do With Donkeys?

July 2024 - Article 1

This is one of the top questions we get asked by people .. what do you do with donkeys?

What can donkeys do besides look pretty in the pasture?  Pretty much anything a dog can do and more is our usual answer.  Donkeys are affectionate, curious, and enjoy interacting with humans.

Take them for a hike, start showing them, teach them how to do an obstacle course, and more.  They can visit schools, convalescent hospitals or even help people with therapy. Summer and fall are peak times for donkey events and a great time to learn about therapy programs.

Here is a list of our favorite activities with donkeys:

Hiking .. or as we like to call it, Hee Haw Hikes

One of the most enjoyable activities you can do with donkeys is hiking. Donkeys are excellent companions for long walks due to their sure-footedness and steady pace. When taking your donkey on a hike, ensure you have the right equipment, such as a well-fitted halter and lead rope. Start with short walks to build their stamina and familiarity with different terrains.

Donkeys can also carry supplies in saddlebags, making them perfect for longer treks. This can be particularly useful if you enjoy camping or long-distance hiking. Always ensure that the load is well-balanced and not too heavy for the donkey.

Agility Training

Agility training is a fantastic way to bond with your donkey while providing them with mental and physical stimulation. Set up an obstacle course with items such as cones, poles, and tunnels. Encourage your donkey to navigate through the course, rewarding them with treats and praise for their efforts.

Agility training helps improve your donkey's coordination, confidence, and trust in you. It's also a great way to show off their impressive abilities to friends and family.

Donkey Soccer

For a fun and unique experience, try playing donkey soccer. This activity involves training your donkey to kick a ball into a goal. Start with a large, lightweight ball that is easy for the donkey to kick. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, to encourage them to interact with the ball.

Donkey soccer can be played individually or with a group of donkeys and their handlers. It's a playful way to exercise and entertain both you and your donkey.

Pack Trips and Picnics

Pack trips are an enjoyable way to explore the great outdoors with your donkey. Load up their saddlebags with a picnic and head out for a day of adventure. Donkeys are known for their stamina and ability to carry supplies, making them ideal companions for such outings.

Choose a scenic spot for your picnic, and enjoy a meal in the company of your donkey. Don't forget to pack some donkey-friendly goodies like low sugar horse treats. This activity allows you to relax and enjoy nature while strengthening your bond with your donkey.

Donkey Therapy

Donkeys have a calming presence, making them excellent therapy animals. Donkey therapy involves spending time with donkeys in a serene environment, which can be beneficial for people with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues.

If you have a calm and gentle donkey, consider visiting local schools, nursing homes, or hospitals. Sharing the joy and tranquility that donkeys bring can have a positive impact on others. Always ensure that the donkey is comfortable and that the environment is safe and stress-free.

Donkey Shows and Competitions

Participating in donkey shows and competitions can be a rewarding experience. These events often include categories such as conformation, agility, and driving. Preparing for a show involves grooming, training, and working closely with your donkey to ensure they are ready to perform.

Shows and competitions provide an opportunity to meet other donkey enthusiasts and learn more about these remarkable animals. They also offer a platform to showcase your donkey's talents and the hard work you've put into training them.

Educational Programs

Donkeys can play a significant role in educational programs, especially for children. Organize a visit to a local school or community center to teach others about donkeys. Share interesting facts, demonstrate grooming techniques, and allow participants to interact with the donkey.

Educational programs can help dispel common myths about donkeys and promote their welfare. They also provide a fun and engaging way for people to learn about animal care and the importance of respecting all creatures.

Gardening and Farm Work

Donkeys can be great helpers in the garden or on the farm. They can assist with tasks such as pulling carts, carrying supplies, or even tilling soil with the right equipment. Incorporating donkeys into your gardening routine can make chores more enjoyable and less strenuous.

Additionally, donkeys' natural grazing habits can help manage weeds and promote healthy pasture growth. Just ensure they are not overgrazing any particular area to maintain a balanced ecosystem and a healthy donkey.

Donkey Dash and Pack Races

Imagine running a marathon with a partner who is a donkey, and in the case of Pack Races, the donkey is also wearing a pack saddle filled with traditional mining tools.  Running a marathon will take some time to get you and your donkey in shape, and requires a donkey that actually likes to run (most really don’t).  Not into running?  Most races will allow walkers and the pack saddle is optional.  Might be a fun way to get started then see where the trail leads you.

Conclusion

Donkeys are versatile and intelligent animals that can participate in a wide range of activities. Whether you're hiking, playing donkey soccer, engaging in agility training, or simply enjoying a picnic, these activities provide excellent opportunities to bond with your donkey and enrich their lives. By spending quality time together, you can create lasting memories and build a strong, trusting relationship with your donkey.
